The three ducks keep flying

In La Malbaie, the Auberge des 3 Canards is probably one of the most renowned spots after the famous Manoir Richelieu in the Pointe-au-pic area. The inn, owned by the Marchand family since 1981, has been welcoming visitors for nearly 65 years. After a recent stint under Hélène Marchand, new owners took over in 2022.
Last year, Éric Ouellet, a long-time employee, took over as general manager. Much of the team from recent years is still on staff. The new owners, who already operate another establishment in Charlevoix, wanted to benefit from the experience of the staff already in place.

In recent years, the inn has undergone a facelift. A few renovations deemed "necessary" were made for the G7 summit in Charlevoix in 2018. However, the COVID-19 pandemic seemed an opportune time to make significant improvements to the main lounge, dining room, and reception area, along with many guest rooms. Windows were replaced, carpets removed, floor coverings replaced, and the woodwork redone, keeping its old-time charm.

The establishment received financial aid through a program for tourism businesses affected by COVID. Significant investments were made. Beyond the "aesthetic" changes, the inn believed the time was right to "change the way things were done," as the general manager explained in a May 2023 interview. For example, menus can now be viewed using a QR code on a smartphone. The IT system was also upgraded to streamline reservation and management operations.

The 3 Canards dining room will continue to charm diners, with a panoramic view of the great river as a bonus. In July 2024, we enjoyed its gourmet cuisine again. The verdict: the quality and flavours still deliver.

After a delicious smoked salmon starter, the gazpacho was bursting with freshness and flavour. Next, the duck breast, served as the main course, delighted the palate.

As for accommodation, its forty or so rooms and suites continue to welcome guests in an inviting decor and enchanting surroundings. 3 canards

Where does the name 3 Canards come from?

The question comes up often. Part of the answer lies in the immense statue that crowns the flowerbed at the site entrance: a bust of three men. Its name likely comes from one of those Franco-English linguistic twists that characterize so many local expressions. The three founders, who were doctors, were colloquially known as 'The Three Docs'. From there, confusing the French 'docs' (doctors) with the English 'ducks' was just a short, webbed step away.

The Charlevoix region was home to an American colony for much of its history, and cultural proximity did the rest. La Malbaie is said to have been Canada's first vacation resort.
